Documentation of Archaeological Objects
Small Roman archaeological object documented with millimetric precision thanks to 2freedom
A local museum needed to document a valuable Roman oil lamp (lucerna) from the 1st century AD, adorned with mythological reliefs, with high precision. This small object, barely 10 cm long, posed specific challenges:
- Need to capture the decorative relief details with millimetric precision.
- Documentation of partially eroded inscriptions.
- Faithful recording of the patina and surface coloration changes.
- Inability to excessively handle the piece due to its fragility.
- Requirement to create a complete digital record for international researchers.
3D Solution:
The 2freedom team implemented a solution specifically for small object capture:
- Video recording with a smartphone: In this case, we took advantage of the phone’s capabilities to film close-up objects. We recorded a video, making sure the image was in focus and that every detail was captured.
- 2fVideomodeling: We used the 2fVideomodeling software to generate a textured mesh from the recorded video. This allowed us to reconstruct the relief surfaces with high precision, as well as capture the full texture of the oil lamp.
The capture and digitization process included:
- Careful capture of the object from multiple angles to document every detail.
- Controlled lighting to avoid shadows and dark areas.
- Use of 2fVideomodeling to generate a complete 3D reconstruction with photorealistic texture, accurately capturing patinas, wear, and every ancient imperfection that makes the object priceless.
- Using the model, various studies were conducted to understand the manufacturing techniques of these utensils, as well as pigment analysis based on the remaining traces found on the artifact.
Application:
2freedom technology enables archaeology and restoration companies to:
- Millimetric precision in the documentation of the entire object.
- Clear recording of partially visible inscriptions on the base of the oil lamp.
- Detailed documentation of the decorative reliefs depicting mythological scenes.
- Identification of manufacturing marks not visible to the naked eye.
- Complete 3D model that enables precise measurements and detailed analysis of the piece.
- Digital foundation for research and potential restoration.
